The microcosm series acts almost as a counterpoint to the planets series. This planet, our planet, is now deserted and scorched. A place where life seems to have disappeared.
Man looks up to the planets, but looks down upon the earth it lives on. what we see in the microcosm series is one or several layers of burnt soil with sometimes a golden leaf or a brighter colour appearing beneath as to symbolize the remaining hope of another life.
for the microcosm series, David always uses the three basic elements: Earth (through the use of wood for the canvas), water (to dilute pigments that will give the colour to the works) and fire which is at the core of the microcosm series.
